One of the most significant details of the Jügelhaus on the Bockenheim campus are the three golden medallions featuring the profiles of Immanuel Kant, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, and Wilhelm von Humboldt. Beyond their decorative value, they perfectly illustrate the role this iconic building has played in Frankfurt from the very beginning as a place for people to come together and for the promotion of the sciences and the fine arts.
This is how its Neo-Baroque design should be understood—as a tribute to the beautiful style that had flourished throughout Europe centuries earlier. The rich and opulent decoration, as well as the complex architecture—which required an enormous investment for a building intended primarily to serve the Academy of Social and Commercial Sciences—are a clear indication of this.
And now, nearly 120 years after its inauguration, the former main building of Goethe University Frankfurt pays even greater tribute to the fine arts—though in a way that architect Ludwig Neher could hardly have imagined: a candlelight concert.

For anyone unfamiliar with live music: Candlelight is an event unlike any other in the world. In the intimate atmosphere of an imposing hall lit only by candlelight, visitors can enjoy musical pieces from all genres like never before. From the greatest classical masterpieces to film soundtracks and the hits of the most iconic bands—every concert is equally unique and magical.
And it’s no coincidence that the Jügelhaus was chosen as the venue for these concerts. Just as the building, with its distinctive architecture and decoration, evokes a bygone artistic era, the string quartet, led by soloist Marta Danilkovich, will take visitors on a nostalgic musical journey. Whether you’re one of Freddy Mercury’s most ardent fans or a lover of classic rock, you won’t want to miss this tribute to Queen. You’ll have the unique opportunity to discover the legendary British band’s anthems—such as “I Want To Break Free,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and more—in a new light through this amazing interpretation.
In keeping with this, we also have some good news for Hessian otaku—and for anyone who has ever enjoyed a Studio Ghibli film. That’s right: Japanese and German cultures will come together in not just one, but two magical concerts dedicated to the greatest anime soundtracks. Whether you grew up with Sailor Moon, consider *Attack on Titan* the best series of all time, or can’t stop watching *My Neighbor Totoro*, you’ve got a date at the Bockenheim campus.
Candlelight has adapted to the new circumstances and brings us the best music in true style, while maintaining social distancing among the audience and taking all necessary safety precautions.* **
